I made this simple handkerchief-style top out of the “leftovers” from another project (a bandana for my cat that took like 4 square inches of fabric).
For this project, I made up the pattern as I went along. I based it pretty much exactly on the first patented brassier (patented by Mary P. Jacob in 1914). The basic idea is a front piece of fabric that has ties wrapped around the body and tied to secure the garment. I finished the front seam with a flat felled seam and made ties from strips of fabric folded like bias tape (although not cut on the bias).
I used this super cute quilting cotton designed by Rae Ritchie for Dear Stella Designs, which I got at Stonemountain and Daughter. I love the witch-y vibes and the limited color palette of purple and blue speaks to my soul.
This top was a super fun one day project. Although before I make another one I need to make a simple, solid colored dress to go underneath!
